born 1823 - died 1889

 

 

born at Montpellier, and studied in Paris,

gaining the Prix de Rome in 1845.

1863년 마네의 '풀밭 위의 식사'가 살롱전에서 낙선 하였을때 

대상받은 작품이 바로 '카바넬'이 그린 상단의 '비너스의 탄생'이다.

이 '비너스의 탄생'은 당시 이 작품에 감동을 받은 나폴레옹 3세가

구입해 주었다고 한다.
